Thailand Grand Festival
SONGKRAN SPLENDOURS
Featuring the Thai New Year festivities and
Bangkok's 220th Anniversary Celebrations

APRIL 7, 2002
9-DAYS & 9-NIGHTS GRAND SONGKRAN FESTIVAL IN BANGKOK

BANGKOK GRAND SONGKRAN FESTIVAL
OPENING CEREMONY
The Maha Jessadabodhin Pavilion
16:00 - 24:00

Bangkok, the City of Angels and the city with the longest name in the world, is celebrating the convergence of the Songkran Thai New Year celebrations and the 220th anniversary of the founding of the capital in grand style.

Residents and visitors to Thailand alike are gearing up for what promises to be the world's longest new year celebrations - a total of 9-days and 9-nights of festivities.

The opening ceremony held at the Maha Jessadabodhin Pavilion on April 7 marks the official start of this year's Songkran celebrations. On the day, Sanam Luang, the royal fields in front of The Grand Palace, and the roads leading into Sanam Luang such as Rajdamnern Avenue, become the centre stage of an impressive cultural extravaganza featuring a whole range of traditional festivities that usher in Songkran, the Thai New Year.

These include:

Displays of the rain-making Phya Nak or Nagas, the mythical water-serpents

The Phra Buddha Sihing image is bathed with scented holy water

Sand-stupa building contests

Magical displays of water fountains along Rajdamnern Klang Road from the Maha Jessadabodhin Pavilion to the Rattanakosin Hotel from 16:00 - 24:00
SONGKRAN PROCESSION
At the Maha Jessadabodhin Pavilion
16:00 - 18:00

A grand Songkran procession consisting of six colourful and spirited processions such as:

The procession of the rain-making Phya Nak or Nagas, the mythical water-serpents
According to ancient beliefs, the Nagas brought on rain by spouting water from the seas. The more water they spouted, the more rain there would be. So the tradition of throwing water is in essence a rain-making ritual.

"The Legend of the Miss Songkran" Procession

A fancy "Parade of the Stars"
Fans get an opportunity to catch a glimpse of their favourite actors, performers and other popular stage personalities.

The Procession of the 76 provinces
To add to the festive ambience, the processions moves to the beat of traditional and popular Thai music, lively folk songs and serenades by the kingdom's national artists alternated with "Boy Thai" known for their funky dance numbers and famous hits such as Boy Thai Calypso, Siamese Samba, Spicy Brazil and Andaman Sun, all performed by using traditional Thai musical instruments with a contemporary flavour.

Performances featuring the four types of traditional hand-made Thai puppets
Khon, the masked drama
Nang Yai - The Great Shadow Play
The Nang Yai shadow play was highly popular in many countries over a thousand years ago and it is believed that the shadow play received its main influence from India, reaching Siam by way of the South Seas in the Srivijaya period. It was then adapted to conform with Thai tradition and style. Historical accounts suggest that the first performances took place during the Ayutthaya period in 1485 AD.

Nang Yai figures are made from cowhide, intricately perforated. The dances, which were restricted to performances in the royal courts, are majestic. It was customary for men to manipulate the shadow figures, accompanied by a traditional Thai orchestra and narration.

Considered to be the highest level of entertainment, the Nang Yai was only performed on very important events. It is also the basis from which the "Khon" masked drama was developed.

Lakhon Nai
The Lakhon Nai is a sophisticated form of classical Thai dance which originated in the court of Ayutthaya. The dance technique is highly refined and extremely elegant and the performance is accompanied by elaborate Thai musical arrangements.
Only three storylines are featured in the Lakhon Nai - The Unnarut, the Ramakien
and I-Nao. It was performed only by ladies in the court in the Inner Palace hence
its original name - "Lakhon Nang Nai" which was subsequently abbreviated to
the present terminology - Lakhon Nai. Originally the performance could only be
performed by order of the king.

A special performance by the Kab Mongkol School of Dramatic Arts

Lakhon Nok featuring an all male cast
In contrast to Lakhon Nai, Lakhon Nok, traditional Thai folk plays are performed outside the palace walls by a cast of male as well as female performers. Folk tales are related through spoken words or sung.

NONG KHAI
April 11-15
Of all the four regions of Thailand, Songkran I-san style, is perhaps the most colourful and exciting. Given the fast and rhythmic beat of its songs and dance, and the gusto with which the locals participate in folk celebrations, traditional sports and entertainment, there is a good reason, other than the cuisine, why this part of northeastern Thailand has been named "Spicy I-san".

Some of the highlights of the Nong Khai Songkran celebrations are the procession of the Luang Por Phra Sai Buddha image from the chapel conducted in accordance with ancient I-san traditions, the bathing ritual, an I-san art and cultural procession, sand-stupa contests, cultural performances, and food and local handicraft and souvenir contests.
