매년 피타쿤 페스티벌의 참가자들은, 로에이지역의 단사이마을의 전통적인 유령 가면을 몸에 걸칩니다. 페스티벌은 7월 10일 오늘 종료합니다. 태국 북동지역에 있는, 활기가 없고 초라한 마을에 지나지 않는 단사이는 축제가 벌어지는 날동안은 온 나라에서 가장 다채롭고 가장 시끌벅적한 장소 중 하나로 바꾸어 버립니다.
태국 전통 유령가면 축제는 찾아오는 이방인들에겐 매력적입니다.
음악에 맞추어 몸을 흔들어 대다 보면, 가면을 뒤집어 쓰고 있는 사람들은 그들의 모든 두려움과 근심을 잊습니다.
그래서 인지, 그들은 가면은 "마법의" 효과가 있다, 라고 그들이 말합니다.
라오스와 멀지 않은 산간지역인지라, 마을 주민과 행사 직원들이 2일전 부터 3일간의 피타쿤 페스티벌을 벌이는 동안, 단사이 마을에는 수천명의 내외국인 관광객으로 시끌벅적했습니다.

"당신이 다시 피타쿤가면을 쓸 때, 몸은 무기력해 집니다. 가면의 마법이 춤추는 것을 멈출수 없게 만드니까요. 춤추고 또 춤추고.. 계속해서 춤출 수 밖에 없어요" 가면을 쓴 때, 파차라폴푼타왓(9)(Pathom 3 학생)은 이런 마법을 느꼈다고 했습니다.

과거에, 축제용 가면은 한 번만 사용되고 폐기되었습니다.그러나, 지금, 전통은 바뀌었습니다. 치타나씨는, 가면 및 축제의 복장이 이 날 2000바트 정도의 고가에 거래된다고 말했습니다.

Welcome to the charming spell of the Thai magical mask which turns the sleepy, small district town of Dan Sai in this northeastern province into one of the most colourful and vibrant places in the country.
People who wear the masks forget their fears, as they let their bodies move in time with the music.
The masks have a "transporting" effect, they say.

Sitting in a mountainous area not far from the border with Laos, Dan Sai was flooded by thousands of local and foreign tourists when local villagers and officials kicked off the three-day Phi Ta Khon festival two days ago.
The feelings of unmasked visitors at the festival would probably not match those behind the mask.
"The Phi Ta Khon mask is magical. Whoever puts it on gets a happy feeling and can't stand still. Most begin to dance and shake their bodies with the flow of music," said Chintana Kaensaree, a teacher of Ban Dan Sai school.
The 51-year-old instructor has taught the folk art of Phi Ta Khon to pupils in every school of the district, which includes the subject in its curriculum so students can appreciate its meaning and also learn the art of designing the masks.
Young Chetsadaporn Visetpakdi would agree all the more after transforming himself from a Pathom 5 (Grade 5) student into a Phi Ta Khon ghost on the streets.
"It's fun," said the 11-year-old boy.
He took off the mask periodically for a break from exhaustion but his mood of revelry would return once he had it on again.
"When you put on the mask again, all the energy you have lost returns and forces you to dance non-stop. You have to keep dancing and dancing."
Patcharapol Punthawat, 9, a Pathom 3 student, felt the same magic when he put on the mask.
Some thousand ghosts and spirits haunted onlookers yesterday.
The festival also shows the local belief of northeasterners is deep in ghosts and spirits. It is part of Boon Luang, a grand merit-making festival, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The origins of the festival could be traced back to the tale of Lord Buddha's last incarnation before attaining enlightenment. It is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha's penultimate incarnation, returned to his city, it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to greet him with a welcoming parade. And the Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations.
The mask is a traditional folk craft unique to the district. It depends on the imagination and creativity of the maker but must be based on the traditional style.
It comprises the hat, the face and nose. The hat is made from a traditional bamboo container used for steaming glutinous (sticky) rice. The face is made from a coconut leaf and the nose from soft wood.
The activities were originally reserved only for young men.
Women were only allowed to join them four years ago.
"The mask's magic overpowers you, and you just can't resist the urge to dance," said Praewpun Phimsena, a native of Dan Sai, who took part in the festival to keep the tradition alive.
In the past, the masks were used only once and discarded, but now the tradition has changed. Ms Chintana said the masks and the festival costumes are costly to replace these days _ as much as 2,000 baht.
The festival also gives farmers an excuse to celebrate and gives them a break from farming and harvesting, said Prapatchai Chainok, kamman of tambon Dan Sai. It gives them a chance to dance, sing and drink in addition to making merit.
