Border Hours Extended
Thai and Cambodian officials have agreed to allow the Poipet border crossing to remain open for three more hours daily, officials said.
The agreement was reached after officials met with a Thai delegation at the Star Vegas Casino in Poipet, said Thach Khorn, governor of Banteay Meanchey province.
The border, originally open from 8 am to 5 pm, soon will be open until 8 pm, Thach Khorn said. “Opening the border until 8 pm will help facilitate travel of foreign tourists crossing the border,” he said. “On the Cambodian side, the road is not as good as on the Thai side, so tourists cannot arrive at the border right before closing time at 5 pm.” The Thai delegation, led by Thai Senator Suradet Svat, visited the crossing on Sunday with Cambodian officials to look at strengthening border relations between the countries, Thach Khorn said. Thailand partially closed the border earlier this year after the Jan 29 anti-Thai riots in Phnom Penh.
